Postdoctoral Fellow Salary Policy
This Policy states that all Postdoctoral Fellows at MGH will receive a minimum annual salary based on the NIH/NRSA PGY Salary Scale in effect at the time of appointment for years 0-4, commensurate with experience. MGH generally adopts the prior year NIH/NRSA scale at the start of each new fiscal year.
Effective 10/1/2022 (FY23) the NIH/NRSA FY2023 pay scale goes into effect at MGH. Departments should begin using the FY23 NIH/NRSA pay scale for any new postdoctoral fellows beginning on or after October 1, 2022. Existing postdoctoral fellows should be moved to the FY23 NIH/NRSA scale on their next review date.
Non-Employee postdoctoral fellows must be at or above the NIH/NRSA FY22 PGY Salary Scale commensurate with experience. Departments are encouraged to use the NIH/NRSA FY22 PGY Salary Scale when possible.
The Policy also provides an exception process for requests from Investigators who:
- Wish to pay a Postdoctoral Fellow at a NIH/NRSA salary scale PGY level not commensurate with years’ post-graduation. (4.1.2)
- Wish to not adjust compensation on the raise effective date (4.1.3)
- Wish to provide a Postdoctoral fellow with an unpaid role where their primary job is to be trained and/or learn a specific technique or skill set rather than primarily conducting original research. The fellow may remain in this special training role for no more than one year. (4.1.4)
- Wish to use external sources for all or part of the salary support that will be paid to the Postdoctoral Fellow for work to be performed at MGH. (4.1.5)
- Wish to employ a Postdoctoral Fellow less than full time. (4.1.6)
- Clarifications and updates to the policy have been reviewed at ECOR periodically.
