Protocols funded by the Department of Defense (DoD)/Armed Forces

The US Department of Defense (DoD) has specific requirements for the conduct of animal research studies.  The MGH IACUC provides the following for consideration when conducting DoD-funded research.

  • For each DoD-funded project (The Navy, The Army, DARPA), investigators must have a dedicated MGH IACUC protocol. This means that no other funding, other than sundry funds, can be listed on that protocol.
  • The DoD has an additional review requirement for animal research they fund. MGH IACUC protocols must undergo a secondary review by the DoD’s own oversight committees before the animal research can be initiated (BUMED for The Navy, ACURO for DARPA and The Army).
  • The DoD also requires that certain actions must be reported to, and reviewed by, the DoD oversight department, as outlined in the funding agency’s approval letter. These include most modifications/amendments, protocol noncompliance events/ adverse events/ suspensions.
